Males fly to porch lights at night, which is how most people first meet them.

What should I do about mulch and gravel next to the wall?

Pull organic mulch back six to twelve inches from the foundation and keep a band of dry decomposed granite or gravel against the wall instead. Wood chips, bark, and shredded palm hold moisture and provide harborage right where you least want it.

Rock over a permeable weed barrier is fine. Rock over sheet plastic traps water underneath and creates a damp layer that roaches and scorpions will use.

How do I find a leak I cannot see?

Run each zone manually and walk the line while it is on. A one gallon per hour emitter that stays open an extra hour a day quietly puts more than 350 gallons into one spot over a year, and a split in half inch poly tubing under gravel can run for months without a visible puddle.

Look for the tells: an unusually green weed patch, a soft or sunken area, mushrooms in the mulch, algae on a block wall, or a water bill that climbed without explanation.
